After World War II, Shaw worked for Stars and Stripes, and held a string of newspaper jobs, including for the Associated Press in Minneapolis. After leaving the university, Shaw accepted a position as associate professor at the University of Washington.
He then took a job as manager of the Minnesota Newspaper Association. Since his retirement, Shaw has remained active in the association, and has been a dedicated crusader for press freedom and government transparency.
